Down aka Kilo - Lean Like a Cholo

The Oxnard-based rapper Down also-known-as Kilo, born Juan Martinez grew up to classic West Coast Hip-Hop (NWA, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, etc.). "Their lives were pretty much like ours, except they were black and we were brown," says Juan Martinez. "So I wanted to bring the brown flavor to the hip-hop scene." Down started his rap career in the studio slash garage at Edward "E-Dub" Rios house, (E-Dub is known for his "Pocos Pero Locos" radio show). Martinez went on to release his first solo album, "California Cowboys" back in 2003. He also put out a two disc Spanish (disc 1) / English (disc2) language rap album, "Bosses and Jefes " released the following year in 2004. The double CD contained guest appearances with regional Mexican stars Los Razos and Los Reyes de Sonora on the Spanish disc and Snoop Dogg, Roscoe, Kokane, and MC Ren to name a few of the hip-hop artists on the English disc.

With the success of the Terror Squad's club banger "Lean Back" featuring Fat Joe and Remy. Down thought it was time for a Chicano Rap anthem he and his friends could bump to in the night clubs.

"Lean Like a Cholo" is the first single on Down's upcoming album, "Definition of an Ese," set to be released this May 22, 2007 on Kilo Gram/Silent Giant/Machete Music. The album includes collaborations with Flakiss, Nate Dogg, B-Real, Diamonique, and Snoop Dogg. The new album also contains the music video "Definition of an Ese" a song with Inland Empire's own Diamonique.

The New Down "Lean Like A Cholo" Music Video You'll definitely get a kick out of the new music video by a Chicano rapper Down, It's titled "Lean Like a Cholo," and it's all about the cholo style, the old school moves, "It's elbows up, side to side, elbows up, side to side," says Martinez. "It's a dance we've been doing since back in the zoot suit days. It's real old, and no one has ever done a song about it," says Martinez. In the music video, you can spot two cameo celebrities, Mexican American singer Lupillo Rivera and Jerry Heller of Ruthless Records and N.W.A. infamy.
