Largest-ever Art Exhibit of Mexican Icon Frida Kahlo to open in Mexico

The 100th birthday of Mexican artist and cultural icon Frida Kahlo (b.1907- 1954) will be honored with the largest-ever exhibit of her paintings at the Palacio de Bellas Artes located at the corner of Eje Central and Ave Juarez in Mexico City, Mexico.
The 354 pieces will be the largest exposition of Frida Kahlo with Works on loan from Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Detroit, and Japan. It will also be Kahlo's first comprehensive exhibit in Mexico. One-third of her artistic production, manuscripts, and fifty personal letters have not been displayed previously until now.
Frida Kahlo twice married celebrated Mexican muralist Diego Rivera (b.1886-1957), and was the subject of the motion picture biopic starring and produced by Mexican actress Salma Hayek in 2002. Frida Kahlo is arguably Mexico's most original painter. Frida led a hard life, a childhood bout with polio left her right leg slightly withered. Then, when she was eighteen she broke her back in a terrible traffic accident which rendered her incapable of having children. She also suffered emotional pain inflicted by her notoriously philandering husband Diego Rivera. The pain she suffered for much of her life is reflected in many of her often violent and disturbing paintings, particularly her self-portraits. After her death, Frida became "first a legend, then a myth and now a cult figure," Hayden Herrera wrote in a 1992 biography of the Mexican artist titled "Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo".

The exhibit is tentatively slated to open June 13, 2007 until August 19, 2007. The museum is open 10:30 am to 6:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday.
