Gonzalo J. Plascencia became interested in painting murals following a high school course
in Chicano History. This combination of Chicano Studies and Art inspired
Gonzalo to create several
famous murals and paintings featuring both historical and contemporary figures from the
Mexican/Chicano experience. His most popular mural "460 Years of Chicano History" hangs at the Victor Clothing
Company in Los Angeles. The mural captures the evolution of Mexican and
Chicano history from the
Olmecs to the Chicano Civil Rights Movement of the '60s. This mural
became so popular that was
used for a cover of a Chicano Studies textbook, greeting cards, and is widely distributed as a poster.
Other murals include "The Mexican Revolution of 1910" and his most recent "Latinos in Hollywood." Born
in Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Plascencia's family moved to California where he attended Alisal High
School in Salinas, California. He also attended San Jose State and Cal State Northridge majoring in Chicano
Studies and Art. He is presently living in El Paso, Texas where he works on developing a variety of creative
projects in painting murals and posters.
