Spare Parts - Movie Review
A really charming, heart-warming, inspirational movie you've more than likely never heard of, �Spared Parts�.
PLOT:
Four Latino high school students form a robotics club. Without any experience, $800 bucks, used car parts and a dream, this rag tag team goes up against the country's reigning robotics champions, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.).
It had a very small release early last year and deserved a much larger one. We need more movies with Latinos who are not morons, gang-bangers, and thieves trying to do well.
If I hadn't stumbled across a tweet from one of the talented main actors; Oscar J Gutierrez II, I would never heard of this movie, and I'm glad I did.
It�s based on a true story and delivers every emotion necessary to lift your spirits and inspire young people who don't think they're good enough to be more than they can imagine. Funny, charming, and dramatic with a killer, albeit small performance by Esai Morales who just owns every scene he's in with seemingly zero effort.
It was nice seeing George Lopez in a role where he�s not just wise cracking but actually emoting. The characters are more important, to me anyway, than the overall plot. The interplay between the young guys on the robotics team is what makes the film so worthwhile. You'll like everyone and there isn't even the clich� villain. The film didn�t need it.
No evil white guy trying to destroy the teen agers robot so they lose the competition or anything like that. There is a small message or nod to the struggle of undocumented Latinos trying to become legal in the United States, but it�s not ham fisted or sappy and only serves to make you care for the guys that much more.
It�s available for DVD rental on Netflix. Give it a shot. It'll make you smile.
